How Can We Use SFP+ Modules With Ethernet Switches?

Time:2022-03-17 Source:UTEPO

In our last post, we’ve knew what the SFP+ module is. Now, you would have question about how can we use SFP+ modules with Ethernet switches? These four ways will be used in the project.

Different types of optical modules connected to the switch can be applied to different networking solutions, and the following is an introduction to several practical applications of SFP+ modules with the Ethernet switch.

Solution 1: Connection between 10G SFP+ modules and Ethernet switches

Insert four 10G SFP+ modules into the 10-Gbps SFP+ port of one switch in turn, then insert one 40G QSFP+ optical module into the 40-Gbps QSFP+ port of another switch, and finally connect them with a fiber patch cable.

This connection mainly realizes the network expansion from 10G to 40G, which can meet the network upgrade requirements of data centers.

Solution 2: Connection between BiDi 10G single fiber bi-directional SFP+ modules and Ethernet switches

The optical modules are inserted into the SFP+ ports of the two switches and then connect with LC fiber patch cables.

This connection method effectively realizes simple and cost-effective data connection, which can be applied in data centers, enterprise cabling, and Ethernet connection for Telecom operation transmission.

Solution 3: Connection between CWDM SFP+ module and Ethernet switch

This connection uses repeater boxes, media converters, CWDM to connect the optical modules to the switch, realizing the conversion of the RJ45 port on the 10G Ethernet switch to the wavelength needed for the CWDM.

Solution 4: Connection between DWDM SFP+ module and Ethernet switch

Insert the optical module into the switch SFP+ port, and then connect it with DWDM by an armored fiber patch cable.

This connection realizes the protection of optical signals in long-distance transmission, can minimize optical wave loss and is suitable for long-distance optical signal transmission.

Connection Precautions for SFP + Module and Ethernet switch

1. Check the wavelength and transmission distance of the optical modules are the same, which are used in the switches at both ends. In addition to the above, you should also pay attention to issues including single-fiber, dual-fiber, single-mode, multi-mode, etc. If the specifications of the two ends are not the same, you should use the corresponding converter.

2. When using the optical modules, you should avoid static electricity and bump. If there is a bump, it is not recommended to continue using the optical module.

3. Pay attention to the positive and negative insertion of the optical module and keep the pull ring and label face up.

4. When inserting the optical module into the switch, please push it as hard as possible to the bottom, and there will generally be a slight sense of vibration. After the insertion, you can lightly pull the optical module to check whether the installation is in place.

5. When disassembling the optical module, please pull the hand ring to a 90-degree position with the port at first and then pull it out.
