Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a networking feature defined by the IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at standards. PoE lets Ethernet cables supply power to network devices over the existing data connection.

What are the benefits of PoE?

Flexibility: PoE power only requires the installation of a single network cable, which is simple and space-saving.

Cost savings: You do not need to buy extra power supplies for end devices, such as IP Cameras, etc.

Eliminate safety hazards: It only supplies power to the end devices that are connected and need power. Thus eliminating the risk of leakage on the cable.

Remote management: The power supply can be managed over the network, so are the maintenance of the system.

PoE on the traditional power supply and data transmission

The initial IEEE 802.3af provides power and data for the simple and static system. However, with each passing day, more power is available in the standard IEEE 802.3at to drive a variety of embedded motors, it allows cameras to provide more functions including up/down, left/right movement and zoom. Nowadays, with enough power budget in standard IEEE 802.3bt, those cameras with up/down, left/right movement and zoom functions could be integrated fans and heating components to support operating at extreme temperatures. Since the publish of IEEE 802.3bt, it also has brought greater market potential, in the smart building systems, safe cities, thin clients, and a lot more.

13 July, Shenzhen China, Continuing Education Training for Security Practitioners Guangzhou Station was held by Guangdong Public Security & Protection Technology Association. UTEPO CTO Tide Nie was invited this training as the experts to showcase PoE technology to over 200 security practitioners.

With the gradual popularization of network monitoring application, PoE technology has been widely used in various fields of security monitoring at present. The single network line can not only transmit data but also provide power at the same time. Eco-Friendly and safe, but it also avoids cumbersome wiring.

In the lecture, Mr. Tide Nie made all-around exposition on the SWOT of PoE, the overturn of POE technology bring to traditional power supply and data-transfer. He also explained in detail base on POE products system, corollary equipment, innovative technology, typical application and solutions. By this lecture, all participants had been clarified with PoE technology. Some of them actively consulted and communicated with experts about problems and doubts in POE application. The participants also felt it was very rewarding to take part in such industry training activities, and they had a more comprehensive and systematic understanding of PoE technology, and they were full of confidence in the future of this technology.
